TeachingType
TeachingType is an initiative by tutors, students and people interested in typography, typographic education and related subjects. The aim of this platform is to develop and refine graphic design education. We believe that a constant discussion and evolution is happening in our profession and so it is happening in its educational methodologies. Procedures, aims and purposes change not just from college to college or from student to student, but also from day to day. Rather than passively seeing where this fast moving current is taking us and our students, we passionately navigate in this stream; enjoying the journey; enthusiastically learning.
Teaching type attempts to introduce and develop strategies in design education. It acts as forum to share experiences and findings. It connects sometimes rather loose strings to bring sense to a complete curriculum or a simple workshop.
Members of TeachingType have engagements with the following universities:
Central Saint Martins, London
Royal College of Art, London
University of Portsmouth
University of Applied Arts Vienna
London College of Communication
Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo
HyperWerk, FHNW, Basel

Paulus M. Dreibholz
Typographer, educator
Paulus M. Dreibholz is a typographer and graphic designer based in London. The output of his atelier reveals his focus on editorial and typographic design in the form of printed matter, corporate identities, typefaces and exhibition pieces. His studio work is continuously substantiated and challenged by his writing and teaching practice. Dreibholz’ approach to design is based on his theory of the inherent meaning of form and the human understanding of it.
Dreibholz currently is lecturer at the BA Graphic Design and MA Communication Design course at Central Saint Martins and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He regularly conducts typographic workshops and lectures at colleges and universities across Europe and is a founding member of TeachingType (teachingtype.com), a platform for exchange between educators in the field of visual communication.
Dreibholz’ work has won various awards and has been featured extensively in publications and exhibitions.

Adriana Eysler
Designer, educator, theorist
Adriana is a designer, educator and theorist. Her interest lies in design and other forms of cultural practice (be that literature, film, music, art) as a voice for dissent and as a means for facilitating/offering alternative ways of communicating, participating, living and working that are not based on commodification and capitalization, but multiplicity, conviviality and democracy. Graphic design, typography and related practices play a crucial role in helping articulate a multitude of voices and contents. Adriana's teaching approach encourages an ongoing collective engagement (tutor + students) with complex issues relating to design as a visual and social practice. The design studio becomes a place for dialogue, experimentation, discussion, reading, making, in which students and tutors are equal researchers.

Catherine Nippe
Designer
Catherine Nippe teaches Communication Design and Typography.
Catherine aims for a process orientated teaching practice. Workshops and semester-projects intend to lead to a process, where students gain knowledge through experience. Her Briefs contain a set of questions, boundaries, tasks and loose ends, which become the trigger for a debate between the student, the subject matter and the class.
Taking the output and tasks as the cornerstone she explains and introduces relevant rules and practices in relation to the field.
n her own practice Catherine likes to share and discuss ideas and debates, rethink visions and collaborate with other people, who share the passion for communication design.
Her original background (Master) was exploring language in the context of its medium. Comparing the printed word to the spoken she spend some time in the field of motion graphics but since than returned to print and typography.
After having spent some time at Mutabor Design, Studio Pizz and the Design Laboratory at Central Saint Martins Catherine became a Freelancer in summer 2006. In the past few months she was commissioned for several print and screen projects within the field of art, design and architecture.
